Żejtun Festa Programme: What to Expect Day-by-Day
The festa is a shape the week takes, and the shape only makes sense if you know what each day is for. Here is the day-by-day breakdown of Żejtun’s St Catherine festa, in the order it actually unfolds.
This article is a stub. The shape below is consistent year to year; specific times shift each season — see the parish’s published programme for the current schedule.
The standard pattern
Sunday before festa. Decorations begin to go up. By Monday morning the parish facade is dressed in red damask and the apostle statues are out along the procession route. Monday to Thursday. Evening novenas in the parish church, with smaller band marches and fireworks each night; the parish square fills up gently. Friday. The big band march of the week — both clubs play, and the streets carry an energy unlike anything else in the Maltese calendar. This is the night locals tell visitors to come for. Saturday. Vigil mass, more contemplative; late-night fireworks if the weather permits. Sunday. Solemn pontifical mass in the morning. The procession of the titular statue of St Catherine in the late afternoon and evening, accompanied by both bands and the full parish, with fireworks at intervals. The statue returns to the church late and the festa formally closes.
[LOCAL FACT — Mattew to add the parish’s current published programme each year, with start times for the principal events.]
What festa week feels like
There’s a particular atmospheric build through festa week that the day-by-day breakdown doesn’t quite capture. Monday and Tuesday are quiet, almost private; the parishioners are the only people on the streets. By Wednesday the energy starts to lift. Thursday brings the first serious crowds. Friday is the explosion. Saturday is a deep breath. Sunday is the resolution. If you only have one or two days, picking the right ones matters more than picking which sites you’ll see. Most visitors who come for the wrong day leave wondering what the fuss was about; most who come for the right day understand instantly.
