Walking From Żejtun to Marsaxlokk, Marsascala and St Thomas Bay

Three coast walks, all starting from Żejtun: down to Marsaxlokk’s harbour, across to Marsascala’s promenade, and out to St Thomas Bay’s swimming spots. Realistic times, surfaces, and a few honest warnings.

This article is a stub. We’ll add detailed routes, GPX tracks where useful, and seasonal notes as we expand the Walks pillar pages.

The three walks

Żejtun to Marsaxlokk is the shortest — about 2.5 km, mostly downhill, 30 to 40 minutes at an unhurried pace. The route runs through residential streets and out into agricultural land before dropping down to the harbour. Pavements are reasonable but patchy in places. Sunday morning is the best time, lined up with the harbour market. Żejtun to Marsascala is the longest — about 4 km, mixed terrain, an hour at a steady pace. The route works better in the cooler half of the year. Bring water in summer. Żejtun to St Thomas Bay goes via the lanes east of town toward Marsascala and then branches off to St Thomas Bay’s small swimming spots; about 3.5 km, mostly flat, an hour. Quieter than the other two and excellent in spring and autumn.

What to take on each walk

All three coastal walks share the same kit list with small variations. Water, more than you think — a litre per person in summer. Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, light long-sleeve. Sturdy footwear; trainers are fine in cool months, sandals are not enough in summer. A swim kit if you’re walking to a place you can swim. A small cash float for the bus or a coffee at the destination. A phone with a route loaded offline; the Maltese mobile network is good but coverage drops in a couple of the lanes between Żejtun and the coast. Light rain gear in winter.
